BOSTON, MA - On a crisp clear Saturday morning, The Minutemen traveled to Boston to compete in the annual Catholic Memorial Invitational. The host site for the 1992 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, Franklin Park boasts a deceptively challenging 5k course with which athletes measured themselves as championship season approaches.
Highlights from the Varsity Races:
After dominating the field at last year's race, the girls were less than one-hundred percent this year but with some gutsy performances still managed the bronze medal with 104 points. Marshfield was first with 59 points and Beverly was runner up with 82. The Lady Minutemen were lead by a strong effort from captain Pauline Steines. The senior was first across the line for Lexington, placing 11th in 20:11. Fellow classmate Maude Hajjaj was LHS's next finisher - 20th overall - in 20:49. Following the two seniors was freshmen sensation Mirra Payson. The young harrier was certainly not at one-hundred percent but refused to be held of the race and gutted through the race to finish third for her team and 22nd overall in 20:56. Sophomore Julia Lennon-Newell (21:06) used a ferocious kick down the homestretch to grab 24th place. LHS's all important fifth finisher was senior captain Isabel Siu-Zmuidzinas who had one of the best runs of the day turning in a personal best 21:21 to finish 31st overall. Another last minute addition to the lineup was senior captain Summer Spencer. She turned in a 21:25 to finish 36th overall.
As was the case at both the Highland Park and Ocean State Invites, the boys ran well by went up against a buzz-saw from outside of the Bay State. This time it was the boys from Pinkerton Academy (NH) placing four runners in the top 10 to take the title with 39 points. However, despite being undermanned The Minutemen were able to finish runner-up to the Long Red Line. Senior captain Micah Benson led the way for Lexington by finishing fifth in 16:36. He was followed by fellow classmate and captain Matt McAlarney (16:48) in 12th place. Junior captain Max DiCerbo (16:56) was next for LHS crossing the line in 14th; he was followed closely by a hard charging Selvin Backert who crossed the line in 16:57 to finish 15th. The Minutemen's fifth man was senior Seth Cutler who's time of 17:17 was enough for 22nd overall. The lone underclassmen competing with Lexington's varsity squad was sophomore Evan Eberle (17:20); he finished just behind Cutler in 23rd place.
Highlights from the Freshmen Races:
Running in the first race of the morning The Lady Minutemen's freshmen team did exactly what they have been doing all season long, running as a pack and blowing the doors off other school's freshmen teams. While the 3k freshmen races were not scored, had they been, Lexington's young harriers would have breezed to the title by placing all five runners in the top 10. Kayla Gordon led the way in 12:48, just edging out Ashley Taylor (12:49). They were followed by Serena Caira who crossed the line in 12:59, and Chloe Bloch-Pacheco was next in 13:19. The quartet's pack attack took the three through six places overall. LHS's final freshmen was Julia Littlewood who grabbed 10th place with a time of 13:29.
Following the girls' lead, the freshmen boys also ran as a tightly knit pack in their race. Aidan McPhee was first for The Minutemen in 11:12. He was followed closely by Ian Miller (11:13) and Antonio Lopez (11:14). The trio finished 14th, 15th, and 16th respectively. Kyle Taylor (11:18) was next across the line for LHS; his time placed 18th overall. Lexington's final finisher was Andrew Hine, who's gritted through the course in a time of 11:29 and grabbed a 23rd place finish.
