READING, MA - Tuesday afternoon, The Minutemen welcomed Reading Memorial High School for their final regular season meet of the 2019 season. For Lexington's seniors the meet gave them one last chance to race the toughest 5000 meters in the Middlesex League. While the boys put their undefeated regular season on the line against the unbeaten Rockets, with the winner claiming the Liberty Division crown. Boasting the state's #1 ranked squad, the boys proved that they are simply a cut above every other team in the League by taking the first six spots en route to a 15-47 thumping of the Rockets. Not to be outdone, The Lady Minutemen cruised to victory by a nearly perfect score of 15-48, bringing their final regular season record to 5-1.
Celebrating Senior Day the only way they know how, The Minutemen's senior captains took four of the top five spots in the race to put a stamp on their perfect regular season. Micah Benson took the tape in a personal best time of 16:21; that was also the fastest time run on Lexington's course all season. He was followed by fellow classmate Matt McAlarney who crossed the line in a PR of his own (16:30). Junior Nick Porter built upon his solid finish against Woburn by placing third in the race in a time of 16:44. Selvin Backert used his signature finishing kick to grab fourth place for his team, crossing the line in 16:47. Adam Bernstein was The Minutemen's fifth man; he sealed the one through five sweep with his time of 16:51. Next across the line was junior Maxim Slobodchikov who ran a PR of 16:57. Another PR was ran by senior Jack Stevens who was LHS's seventh runner and finished 10th overall in 17:33. Stevens just edged out sophomore Graham Bracken (17:33). The Minutemen's final two finishers were a pair of seniors who both went out with a PR in their final home meet. Anthony Mabardy was 13th in the varsity race in 17:44, while Josh Backert (18:02) crossed the line in 16th.
"Runner on the Course" by Izzy Jakimczyk:
'Twas senior night (mid day?) at Lincoln and all through the course
Parents, friends and Diamond XC were cheering, but it didn’t make Loring less of a force.
The team formerly known as The Lady Minutemen but now the self-proclaimed “Daughters of the Revolution” said a heart wrenching goodbye to their seniors this afternoon and the seniors said a not so heart wrenching goodbye to Lexington’s home course. But, that’s not to say that certain Lex seniors didn’t leave their final mark on our daunting course this afternoon! Senior captain Isabel Siu-Zmuidzinas shattered her home course PR dropping a quick 21:02 to finish off an era. After talking everyone’s ear off at a mile-a-minute-pace during warm ups Isabel was able to harness that energy and put everything on the table for her final hurrah at Lincoln Field. Next came captain Summah Spencah who wrapped up her XC career in a respectable 21:43. However, she really wrapped things up with a post-race visit to Ranc's where yours truly bent the rules to scoop her the two flavored micro she ordered (I know, unbelievable, but she's amazing and deserved it). Shout out to our lovely seniors, captain Danna “who knows how many hips she has these days” Ofek (19:59) and Maude Hajjaj (20:38) for bringing a first and second place finish for the Lex girls squad. These two ladies have both had themselves a heck of a season. And finally, last but not least, our very own "Saltine" Steines completed a workout today as a way of showing our home course she's had more than enough of its shenanigans over the past four years. But not to fret! This won’t be the seniors' last bouts at making history and crushing 5Ks. The greatly anticipated League Championships are just around corner where the seniors will lead the team to "The Wu" for another opportunity at a big PR.
We love you seniors! Get hyped for League and remember to bring your golf irons for some pickup after the JV overflow races wrap up!
