LEXINGTON, MA - Tuesday afternoon The Minutemen began Middlesex League competition with a cross division meet against the Wakefield Warriors. For the boys this meant putting their #1 rank on the line against the second highest ranked team in the League - the Warriors ranked #20 in the state on Baystate Running's countdown. Despite surrendering the top two places in the race the boys' pack attack came through with the next six finishers to win the meet 25-35. On the girls side, Lexington's ladies easily dispatched Wakefield by a nearly perfect score of 15-47.
The boys race saw The Minutemen drive the pace early, with the lead pack coming through the mile in 5:05. Things stretched out over the hills in the second mile before the Warriors' one-two punch of seniors Tanner Jellison and Matt Roberto pulled away from The Minutemen's top runners. Jellison ending up taking the tape in 16:29 and Roberto was right on his heels in 16:33. With the meet in doubt, LHS's captains took the race back by grabbing the next four places. Junior captain Max DiCerbo placed third in 16:41, while senior captains Matt McAlarney (16:47), Selvin Backert (16:54) and Adam Bernstein (17:09) came across the line next. After the captains sophomore Daniel Ramsey (17:10) just edged fellow classmate Graham Bracken (17:10) as The Minutemen's all important fifth man to seal a victory for his team. Rounding out Lexington's top 10 was sophomore Evan Eberle (17:21), junior Maxim Slobodchikov (17:21), sophomore Noah Quadri (17:53), and senior Anthony Mabardy who, competing in his first varsity race, finished in 17:58.
In the girls race LHS rested a number of their top runners, which opened up an opportunity for some newcomers to stake their claim to a varsity spot moving forward. Senior captain Pauline Steines cruised to victory in a time of 20:50. Lauren Sterne (21:01) just outkicked teammate Zoe Gu (21:02) at the line; the two placed second and third respectively. Another close finish came as sophomore Julia Lennon-Newell finished fourth in 21:16, just a second ahead of senior Maude Hajjaj (21:17). Clara Fu was seventh overall in 21:24. Captains Summer Spencer and Isabel Siu-Zmuidzinas started their senior seasons off well running 21:30 and 21:45 respectively. Freshmen Serena Caira (22:09) and junior Lorelei Marcell (22:30) were the final two varsity finishers across the line for the girls.
Up Next
The Minutemen are back in action this Saturday at 9:30am when they travel down to Attleboro to compete in the inaugural Highland Park Invitational. This is the first race ever competed on newly minted course named for 1996 U.S. Olympian and former Bishop Feehan great Mark Coogan. The meet will feature the top teams from both Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and will serve as a preview for things to come this fall.
