LEXINGTON, MA - Tuesday saw The Minutemen face off against their first Liberty Division challenger in the Middlesex League, Winchester. For the #3 ranked girls, this meant they would face off against what will likely be their toughest test of the regular season in the #19 ranked Sachems. The Lady Minutemen fought hard but fell to a very determined Winchester squad 30-25. On the boys side The Minutemen were able to cruise to victory by a final score of 19-44.
Winchester's girls had this one circled on their calendar since schedules were announced and were even in Lexington going over the course this past weekend, so LHS knew they would have their hands full. Senior Lizzy Reynolds set the tone for the meet by taking the tape in 19:22 for the Sachems. She was followed by The Minutemen's top runner, freshman Ruby Fehm (19:31). From there the two teams alternated their next four finishers, and when Winchester junior Sofia Wilson crossed the line in ninth place the victory was sealed for the Sachems. Despite the tough loss, LHS had a number of strong performances on the afternoon. Freshman Mirra Payson recovered from a difficult race in the heat on Saturday to finish fourth overall in 20:04. Sophomore Julia Lennon-Newell (20:38) was nearly 40 seconds faster than her time against Wakefield, placing eighth in the process. The Minutemen's all important fifth finisher was senior Maude Hajjaj who crossed the line in 21:03. Captains Pauline Steines (20:19), Isabel Siu-Zmuidzinas (21:33), and Summer Spencer (21:55) were all among LHS's top ten finishers. Rounding out the top ten was junior Anna Nelson (21:17) finishing 11th overall, sophomore Clara Fu who was 16th in 21:57, and junior Lauren Sterne finished 17th in 22:02.
Lexington's boys did not nearly encounter the fight with which their female counterparts were faced. The team breezed through the first mile with Winchester's top group before moving away from the Sachems over the course of the hills in the second mile. Using a furious kick over the final 800m, senior captain Micah Benson won the race in 16:58. After Winchester senior William Coakley crossed the line in second place, the next seven finishers were from Lexington. Senior Seth Cutler followed closely behind Coakley in 17:08. Next was the pack of junior Maxim Slobodchikov (17:36), and sophomores Daniel Ramsey (17:41), Noah Quadri (17:46), and Traver Smith III (17:47) to polish off the victory. Also coming in before the Sachems' second runner was senior Anthony Mabardy (18:00) and junior Reed Solomon (18:07). Running in their first varsity races were sophomore Jerry Xia (18:26) and senior Alasdair Fletcher (18:44).
Up Next
This Saturday The Minutemen travel down to Rhode Island to compete in the Ocean State Invitational, where they will hope to match last year's performance when they won five of the six races in which they competed. The meet - at Goddard State Park - is set to begin at 8:45am.
